10/16/2024 17:14 – DEBRIS PICKUP NEARING COMPLETION: Our final pass for storm debris collection has begun and we ask that all residents and businesses have their debris placed within the right-of-way by Sunday, October 20. If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Works at (912) 330-8650 during regular business hours.
10/10/2024 11:20 – MONITORING CONTINUES: As Milton heads further into the Atlantic, we can expect gusts up to 50 mph near the coastline, along exposed highways, and on elevated bridges and overpasses, which could potentially uproot trees, dislodge broken or weakened limbs, or cause power outages. Winds will then steadily weaken late this afternoon into this evening.
10/9/2024 09:06 – DEBRIS PICKUP & DROP-OFF UPDATE #1: Debris collection efforts related to Helene will continue today as long as the weather remains safe to do so; we estimate that we nearing 50% completion. Our dropoff station is also open today next to Station 1 at 985 South Rogers Street. If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Works at (912) 330-8650 during regular business hours.
As our debris contractors’ removal efforts continue, City operations are focused on preparing for Hurricane Milton. As of this morning, potential impacts for Chatham County include a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Watch. Residents and businesses are encouraged to bring in or secure outdoor objects, restock emergency supply kits, charge battery-powered devices, and prepare for possible power outages as strong winds and falling trees may impact power lines.
10/8/2024 11:43 – MONITORING CONTINUES: While Hurricane Milton is estimated to weaken as it tracks northeast into the Atlantic, impacts may still extend far from its center and coastal flooding in Georgia is likely. Chatham County is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch with .5″-1″ of rain and sustained winds of 25-30 mph expected. As a number of Floridian evacuees make their way to safety, we kindly ask that all drivers be patient on the roadways. The forecast continues to change as Milton nears land, and we will endeavor to keep you updated.
